I've made a few quilts cutting the squares myself. The charm packs make it go faster because the squares are already cut and the material is easy to work with. I love them.

Charm packs save you the time it takes to cut the blocks for quilts yourself. You use them just the same. You might look at a rag quilt tutorial (a great intro to quilting) and get some ideas there. I rarely buy charm packs because you are not picking the fabrics and patterns yourself. There is always one in a pack, I don't like...lol. The fun for me is picking it all myself, but my daughter prefers charm packs. Also they are usually sold in 5" squares, and I like to use a bit larger most of the time. Find a rag quilt pattern and try that. If I can make a rag quilt, anyone can!
