Hearts Beginner Quilt Pattern

"February is the month of L-O-V-E which means all of the hearts and candy. I love making things that are quick, but useful. Using the Janome 1600P-QC makes piecing super fast, yielding a quilt top in no time at all. That is my kind of project. I have always enjoyed working with different types of fabric because the end result can be very surprising. When I knew what the pattern would be for this project, a heart quilt of course, I thought it would be fun to use something lighter than quilting cotton. I chose Heather Ross’ new cotton lawn line called Sleeping Porch with Windham Fabrics.” - Stephanie Kendron of Modern Sewciety

Quilt Finished Size: 74” x 100”

HolidayValentines Day

Materials List

  • Heart fabric or pink in the instructions: 5 3/4 yards (I used a fat quarter bundle of Sleeping Porch)
  • Background fabric or white in the instructions: 2 3/4 yards (I used yardage of the peachy solid in the fat quarter bundle)

Tip: When working with fabrics like cotton lawn and voile, use a smaller stitch length and ALWAYS lock your stitches at the beginning and end of a sewing pass.

Okay, let’s get started! This is a simple block that is super quick to make. Stephanie turned it into a quilt by adding borders, cornerstones and some triangles. Don’t get intimidated by the whole quilt.

Cut:

  • (18) 9 1/4” x 6 1/4” out of the heart fabric (Stephanie used various prints from the FQ bundle)
  • (18) 6 1/4” squares from the background fabric (Stephanie used yardage of the peachy solid in the fat quarter bundle)
  • (18) 9 1/4” x 15” rectangles out of the heart fabric (again, Stephanie used various prints from the FQ bundle)
  • (24) 3” squares for the corner stones (Stephanie used the hot pink solid out of the FQ bundles)
  • Sub cut 7 of the 3” squares diagonally to make 14 triangles
  • (7) 15” squares from the heart fabric (Stephanie used the solids from the FQ bundle)
  • Sub cut the 15” squares diagonally to make 14 triangles
  • (48) 3” x 15 1/2” strips from the background fabric (Stephanie used yardage of the peachy color from the line)

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. There are two seams to the heart block pictured below. You will sew the background 6 1/4” and the heart fabric 9 1/4” x 6 1/4”, right sides together.

  2. Then, you will take that unit and sew it RST to the heart fabric 9 1/4” x 15”.

  3. Stephanie assembled her rows diagonally which was a little tricky, but it all worked out. She started from the top left corner to the right bottom corner. Please make note that on the corners you will have a lot of fabric, but you can just square it up and trim.

  4. “A very side note for this project is a book. One of my all time favorite reads is Heather’s book “How to Catch a Frog”. It is full of stories of her childhood and past. It is beautifully written and really connected me more to her fabric lines.” - Stephanie

  5. Your project is finished! If you love this tutorial, be sure to check out Janome.com for even more inspiration.

NotesYou can really play around with the sashing and borders to make it the size you want. 4 blocks will make a good baby size quilt.
