What is a Chinese Coin Quilt Pattern?

Sometimes referred to as a coin quilt or stacked change quilt, this quilting design consists of rectangular pieces of fabric arranged in stacks that imitate the appearance of a stack of coins. In fact, many quilt historians believe that the Chinese coin pattern originates from traditional Chinese currency having been stacked and tied together with a string after counting. Others believe this design is a nod to an old Chinese motif usually found on decorative baskets. However, since this particular quilting technique has been around for quite some time, it’s hard to determine its true origin. No matter how Chinese coin quilt patterns originated, we’re thankful they're still in use today!
