April 22, 2014—Northbrook, IL—Do you remember that special object you had as a child? You know the one: it stayed with you during mealtimes, playtimes, and of course bedtime, until it wore thin with love. According to a study conducted by G.J. Ybarra, R.H. Passman, and C. Eisenburg, published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology in 2000, these "security objects" are an important feature of childhood development. The study showed that children with a security blanket or object of some kind experienced less psychological stress during times of duress, such as medical examinations.
If a security blanket can help children in normal circumstances weather distress, imagine the good it can do for a child dealing with illness or trauma. Security blankets aren't just nice luxuries; they offer quantifiable psychological benefits for children suffering from anxiety or under duress.
With this in mind, FaveQuilts and Leisure Arts are working together to bring these kinds of comfort blankets to children who desperately need them, with the help of Project Linus, through their Charity Blanket Drive. A nationally recognized organization, Project Linus seeks to "provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer blanketeers."
