INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting Instructions:

Make the following half-square triangles (HSTs):

HST = half-square triangle
RST = right sides together

  1. Make 4 HSTs using fabrics #1 and #3.

  2. HSTs should measure 4½" unfinished.

  3. Press seams towards #3.

  4. Trim dog ears and square-up if necessary.

Create star points:

  1. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the #4 squares using a Hera marker or erasable ink.

  2. Place a #4 square RST on top of a HST aligning the raw edges exactly as shown. (Pay careful attention to the orientation of the HST!)

  3. Stitch on the diagonal line.

  4. Trim ¼" to the outside of the stitching line.

  5. Press seam toward #4 to complete the square. Make 4 units.

  6. Units should measure 4½" x 4½" unfinished. Square-up if necessary.

  7. Construct the center star block as shown.

  8. Press the seams as shown by arrows.

  9. Star block should measure 12½" x 12½" unfinished.

  10. Square-up the block if necessary.

Construct the four-patch units:

  1. Sew 1¼" strips of fabrics #1 / #3 and fabrics #1 / #4 together.

  2. Make 1 strip set of each fabric combination.

  3. Press seams away from fabric #1.

  4. Cut 32 – 1¼" units from each strip set.

  5. Construct 32 small four-patch units.

  6. Press seam open. (I find it helpful to use a Strip Stick to open seams.)

  7. Four-patch units should measure 2" x 2" unfinished. Square-up if necessary.

  8. Use fabric #1 – 2" squares to construct double four-patch units.

  9. Press seams toward fabric #1 squares, as shown by arrows.

  10. Double four-patch units should measure 3½" x 3½" unfinished. Square-up if necessary.

Construct the quilt top:

  1. Arrange the double four-patch units around the center star block, being careful to rotate the units to create the secondary design.

  2. Add the fabric #2 – 3½" squares in the corners.

  3. Assemble the quilt top, which should measure 18½" x 18½" unfinished.

  4. Square-up if necessary and quilt as desired.

  5. Remember to sign and date your quilt with a permanent fabric pen. God bless the USA!
