What is a Jelly Roll?

Maybe you're already familiar with jelly rolls and jelly roll quilt patterns, but for the quilting novices and beginners, we'll go over this term and how it applies to quilting. A jelly roll is not a jelly in a roll as the term seems to describe. Jelly rolls are pre-cut fabric in long strips. The fabric is usually pre-cut into 2 1/2 inch by 42 inch strips that are in coordinating colors and patterns or designs.

You can buy them pretty much anywhere, even Walmart. Moda Fabrics made jelly rolls famous in the fabric market and quilting world. If you're wondering what you can make with these long skinny strips, you'll be surprised at how many jelly roll quilt patterns there are out there. With one jelly roll with 20 strips, you can make a lap or crib quilt.

There are very simply jelly roll quilt patterns, in which you don't have to do much other than trim down the rolls and sew it together as well as more complicated quilt patterns for the more experienced quilter.
