Whether you are looking to make an itty bitty crib quilt for the newest addition to the family, or a king-sized bed quilt to change up your bedroom decor, everything you need to tailor your quilt is included in these quilt as you go instructions. This quilt looks great whether made scrappy or otherwise, and it can also be made reversible!

Materials List

  • 2 yards 42”/45” fabric for front cut in 6” strips across width
  • 2 yards 42”/45” fabric for quilt back cut in 6” strips across width
  • Batting-cut in 5 1/2” wide by 45” long strips


How to Make a Strip Quilt of Any Size

  1. Arrange quilt top strips in desired pattern with back strips.

  2. Starting with the bottom strip of the quilt, place the front strip and back strip wrong sides together.

  3. Flip the front of the adjoining strip over the bottom strip with right sides facing.

  4. Flip the back of the adjoining strip to back, so that the right sides of the back strips are facing.

  5. Sew or serge four layers together.

  6. Flip back strip up.

  7. Place strip of batting on back strip.

  8. Flip front strip up over batting.

  9. Smooth and pin so that batting is encased between the front and back pieces of the second strip.

  10. Repeat from #3 until all strips are sewn and “batted.”

  11. Trim and bind quilt.

How do you keep the batting from shifting?

Never quilted before so I thought that the batting would be secured when sewn between the strips of fabrics. Good question. I think the video and tutorial were very good. Looks to be a pretty easy and quick quilt to make for a gift or for yourself. Have you made a strip quilt before? What is the best to start with?
