What are Celtic Quilts?
While the Celtic Empire spread across much of Western Europe in the 400-500s BC, the Celts and Celtic culture are most commonly associated with Ireland and Great Britain in modern day. Though originally a polytheistic culture, the Celts were later influenced by the Roman Empire and Christianity, and aspects of both cultures often appear in Celtic quilt patterns. Perhaps the most well known design to appear in Irish quilting is the Celtic knot, a design comprised of intricate and interlocking knots or plaits. The Celtic knot is often the centerpiece of these quilt designs and is sometimes combined with a cross as a Celtic cross, which symbolizes both the Celtic and Christian influences within Irish culture. Another version of the Celtic knot in quilting is the Celtic square.
