Beginners Pinwheel Table Runner Quilt-Along: Introduction

Quilt along with us and learn how to make your very first quilt project! In this video series, Christian Tamez will teach us how to make a pinwheel quilt table runner. The introduction includes a materials list and cutting directions for the project. Project Type: Make a Project

Quilt Size: 14 inches wide x 38 inches long

Time to complete: A week or two

Primary Technique: Pieced

Difficulty Level: Beginner

MATERIALS:

  • Rotary cutter, self-healing mat, and quilting ruler
  • 1/4 yd. Fabric A for pinwheel borders
  • 1/4 yd. Fabric B for pinwheel
  • 1/4 yd. Fabric C for pinwheel
  • 3/4 yd. Fabric D for sashing and backing
  • Batting - cotton batting is preferred; you will need enough to cut two 14" x 38" pieces
  • 1/4-inch guide foot for sewing machine
  • Thread in a coordinating color
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Walking foot for sewing machine
  • Optional: size 75 and 90 quilting needles for sewing machine


INSTRUCTIONS

Cutting Directions:

Before cutting, pre-wash and dry all of your fabrics and iron them as flat as can be.

From Fabric D, cut:

  • Two 2" x 37-1/4" strips
  • Four 2" x 10-3/4" strips
  • One 14" x 38" piece for the back

From Fabric A, cut:

  • Six 2" x 10-3/4" strips
  • Six 2" x 7-7/8" strips

From Fabric B, cut:

  • Six 4-1/2" squares

From Fabric C, cut:

  • Six 4-1/2” squares

From batting, cut:

  • Two 14" x 38" pieces

Note: If you prefer you can reduce the layers of batting down to just one.

After you have cut all of the 4-1/2" squares, cut them across the diagonal (point to point) and turn them into triangles.
