What is a Jelly Roll?

Maybe you're already familiar with jelly rolls and jelly roll quilt patterns, but for the quilting novices and beginners, we'll go over this term and how it applies to quilting. A jelly roll is not a jelly in a roll as the term seems to describe. Jelly rolls are pre-cut fabric in long strips. The fabric is usually pre-cut into 2 1/2 inch by 42 inch strips that are in coordinating colors and patterns or designs.

You can buy them pretty much anywhere, even Walmart. Moda Fabrics made jelly rolls famous in the fabric market and quilting world. If you're wondering what you can make with these long skinny strips, you'll be surprised at how many jelly roll quilt patterns there are out there. With one jelly roll with 20 strips, you can make a lap or crib quilt.

There are very simply jelly roll quilt patterns, in which you don't have to do much other than trim down the rolls and sew it together as well as more complicated quilt patterns for the more experienced quilter.

I'm planning on making a few easy quilts to donate to church for the home bound, as well as for those in nursing homes and this looks like it would be easy. Don't have jellyrolls so shall cut my 2 1/2" strips, then go from there. Thank you for sharing.

Natalia's quilts are always adorable. I enjoy using precuts like jelly rolls when I'm quilting because everything coordinates and it's just really easy. I adore the idea of using ric rac down the side of this quilt. It adds a special touch to the project especially for a little girl. Great tutorial! I'll have to add this to my list of projects.

This baby quilt is super cute! Thank you for sharing!

This is a version I did for a friend recovering from an accident. She likes bright colors and the little signs on the back serve as an inside joke. The whole quilt was finished in about 6 hours.

This was super easy and I finished the top in about 3 hours! I used a Kaffe Fasset jelly roll, so it's really bright! I did leave off the contrasting border and put a thin solid border around the whole thing. #BestIdeaEver

I've made 4 of these, really easy. The dire tions were great. #BestIdeaEver

I made this using sail boat and beach fabric with Minky as the backing, it was really cute. The Mom and Grandma loved it.

I want to be able to print the directions how do I do this, for some reason its only printing blank pages....

I want to print up the directions how to do some of these quilts But it's more work than it's worth. I don't just get blank pages, when I high light just the parts I want to print it will not let me. It wants me to print the whole page. No Thank you, I just moved on to something else.

Hi, KMagina65! Since this project is hosted on an external blog, unfortunately we can't help you with printing issues. My advice would be to contact the blogger/designer to ask for a printable file. Best of luck! Happy quilting!

I made this quilt with a Jelly Roll I purchased in Florida. I absolutely love it. It was very easy to assemble and the directions were great. Well done. Although I did not use rick rack on it. I used another border.

I made this quilt using a "monkey" design fabric jellyroll. The roll had some monkey fabrics and some co-ordinating patterned fabric of another line. I was looking for a pattern that was easy but not the standard end to end type of jellyroll race. The Baby/Magic Jelly Roll pattern was perfect. In actuality it was very easy to do and lots of fun. I still have to quilt it, but everyone loves the top. Thanks.

What seam allowance do i use for this magic baby quilt pattern, and does the pink edge go on both sides of the quilt?

I cannot seem to find the link to add this to my quilt basket. Please advise
